The New York City public school system is the largest in the country with an annual budget of $38 billion. It is the most well-funded school system in the nation. Yet, 65% of Black and Hispanic students do not read, write, and do math at grade level. This has been the case for decades.

Under Mayoral Control, two White men, Mayor Bloomberg and Mayor de Blasio, both from Boston, failed at raising the educational outcomes of our children. Yet, the legislature renewed Mayoral Control without any changes while they failed to educate students.

Mayor Eric Adams and Chancellor David Banks, two immensely successful Black men who attended and graduated from NYC public schools, are being handcuffed and denied an opportunity by the teachers union-controlled legislature to fulfill their vision of finally educating our children.

Although the legislature renewed Mayoral Control, they changed the structure and included poison pills that put the majority White teachers union in control to continue to destroy the lives and future of our children.

The School-to-Prison pipeline will continue to feed the Prison-Industrial-Complex thanks to the United Federation of Teachers.
