Africa experienced the heaviest impact in a State Department personnel reshuffle that reassigned nearly 30 U.S. ambassadors and senior diplomats. Career foreign service officers, who typically remain at their posts through administration changes, were among those affected. The recalled diplomats will retain their positions but may return to Washington for other assignments.

Ambassadors from Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Mauritius, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, and Uganda received recall notices. Other regions affected include Asia—Fiji, Laos, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Vietnam; Europe—Armenia, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Slovakia; the Middle East—Algeria and Egypt; South and Central Asia—Nepal and Sri Lanka; and the Western Hemisphere—Guatemala and Suriname. In total, diplomats from 29 countries across these regions were reassigned.

According to a State Department official, ambassadors serve as personal representatives of the president, who emphasized that “it is the President’s right to ensure that he has individuals in these countries who advance the America First agenda,” adding that the reassignments reflect a standard process in any administration.
