Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 694,000 Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs in the United States following a federal investigation into a defect that could lead to fuel leaks and increase the risk of engine fires.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the recall involves certain Bronco Sport models from 2021 to 2024 and Escape models from 2020 to 2022, all equipped with 1.5-liter engines. A cracked fuel injector in these vehicles may cause fuel to leak into the engine compartment, potentially igniting under certain conditions.

The action follows a year-long probe initiated in 2024, after concerns were raised about the effectiveness of Ford’s earlier recall remedies. Previous recall campaigns in 2022, 2024, and early 2025 involved software updates but did not address the root cause of the issue. Ford has now confirmed that vehicles repaired under those campaigns may still be at risk, including eight reported under-hood fires involving cracked injectors.

The automaker plans to issue an updated engine control software as an interim measure. This software will detect potential fuel injector cracks, reduce engine power, shut off the high-pressure fuel pump, and lower temperatures around possible ignition sources. Ford estimated the cost of the recall to be around $570 million, describing it as “the aggregate cost of the action” based on potential remedies under review.

Notification letters will be mailed to affected owners starting August 18. Vehicle owners will also be informed once a permanent fix is available. Ford’s customer service is available at 1-866-436-7332, using recall number 25S76. The NHTSA’s recall reference is 25V-467.
