President-elect Donald Trump announced that he had chosen New York Republican Representative Elise Stefanik to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations on Monday, November 11th. In a statement confirming the news, Trump praised Stefanik as “an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter” and expressed honor in choosing her for the position.

Congresswoman Stefanik, a staunch ally of Trump, is the fourth-ranking House Republican and has long been one of his most vocal supporters in Congress. She made national headlines during the 2019 impeachment hearings for her aggressive defense of Trump and has remained a prominent figure in the GOP since. Additionally, she has been an influential fundraiser for the party.

The selection of Congresswoman Stefanik for this key diplomatic role signals a shift in the United States stance toward the United Nations, with the congresswoman known for her criticism of the international body, particularly over its treatment of Israel. Stefanik has argued for a reassessment of U.S. funding to the UN, especially if the Palestinian Authority continues its push to expel Israel from the organization.

If confirmed by the Senate, Stefanik will replace Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who has served as the U.S. Ambassador to the UN under President Biden. Stefanik’s nomination highlights her rise in the GOP, from her initial win in 2014 as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress to her current role as House Republican Conference Chair.

Stefanik’s appointment would also leave her congressional seat in New York’s 21st District, requiring a special election. While some, including billionaire Elon Musk, have raised concerns about the impact of her departure on the Republican majority in the House, her District is widely seen as a safe Republican seat.
