President-elect Donald Trump announced on Saturday, November 16th, that he has selected Chris Wright, CEO of Liberty Energy, to lead the Department of Energy. Trump sees the appointment as part of a broader strategy to strengthen U.S. energy production and advance the goal of American energy dominance.

“I am thrilled to announce that Chris Wright will be joining my Administration as both United States Secretary of Energy, and Member of the newly formed Council of National Energy,” Trump said in a statement. The newly formed council aims to streamline energy production and regulation across multiple sectors, with a strong focus on reducing red tape and boosting innovation. Trump’s administration views this effort as essential for cutting costs, strengthening the economy, and maintaining U.S. leadership in global energy markets.

Wright, a tech entrepreneur turned energy industry leader, advocates for fossil fuel development, including hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and natural gas exports. He has been a key figure in the American shale revolution, which helped propel the U.S. toward energy independence. He is primarily known for his work in nuclear, solar, geothermal, and oil and gas sectors, claiming that the growth of these industries is critical to alleviating global poverty.

“I am honored and grateful for the opportunity from @realDonaldTrump to serve our country as U.S. Secretary of Energy,” Wright wrote on X following the announcement. “Energy is the lifeblood that makes everything in life possible. Energy matters. I am looking forward to getting to work.”

Wright’s selection has earned praise from conservative figures and industry leaders. Harold Hamm, a prominent oil tycoon, described Wright as an “excellent choice” for the role. However, environmental advocates have sharply criticized his nomination, pointing to his dismissive stance on climate change initiatives.

Wright’s appointment, in line with Trump’s energy agenda, reflects an emphasis on fossil fuels, in contrast to the Biden administration’s focus on climate policies. As Wright begins his new role, he will face the challenge of balancing energy innovation with environmental concerns, a key consideration for the nation’s energy future.
