New York City is preparing for an intense heatwave expected to grip the region later this week.

Forecasters warn that temperatures could climb into the mid- to upper 90s and feel even hotter because of high humidity.

Meteorologists say a strong high-pressure system, often called a “heat dome,” will trap hot air over the Northeast, pushing heat index values above 100 degrees in some neighborhoods.

City officials are advising residents to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon heat, and check on seniors and young children at risk from extreme temperatures.

Cooling centers are expected to open across the city..

The prolonged stretch of hot weather could also increase electricity demand as air conditioners run continuously. Relief may not arrive until the weekend, when a passing weather system could bring scattered thunderstorms and slightly cooler temperatures.
