New Yorkers interested in working for the city will soon have one less expense to worry about. New York City has announced that civil service exams will now be free for first-time test takers and high school students, making it easier for residents to pursue careers in public service.

The new policy removes exam fees that have long been required for many city jobs. Officials say the change is designed to encourage more young adults and first-time applicants to explore careers with city agencies.

Civil service exams are required for many positions, including jobs in public safety, healthcare, engineering, social services and administrative support.

The fee waiver builds on existing exemptions for veterans, unemployed individuals and people receiving public assistance.

City leaders believe eliminating the cost for first-time applicants will help create a larger and more diverse pool of candidates while opening the door to stable careers that offer competitive pay and benefits.

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), which oversees the city’s civil service testing program, also announced that exam notices will now be available in more than 190 languages, making information about city employment more accessible to New York’s diverse communities.

Residents interested in applying for city jobs can find upcoming exam schedules and application information through the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.
