President Donald Trump delivered the longest State of the Union address in modern history on Tuesday, focusing on immigration, national achievements, and future priorities before a sharply divided Congress.

The most widely noted moment came when Trump asked legislators to stand if they agreed that “the first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.” Republicans rose to their feet, while no Democrats did, prompting Trump to remark, “You should be ashamed of yourself, not standing up.” The moment underscored the partisan divide and drew attention ahead of upcoming midterm elections.

Trump also highlighted victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants. Families of those injured or killed, including a young girl seriously hurt in a multi-car crash involving an illegal driver, were invited to the chamber, providing a personal context to the president’s policy emphasis.

Trump recognized military and civilian heroism throughout the address. He awarded the Medal of Honor to 100-year-old naval aviator Royce Williams and Army Chief Warrant Officer Eric Slover, who was injured during the U.S. operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. National Guard members injured in Washington, D.C., received Purple Hearts, while Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan earned the Legion of Merit. Trump also honored the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team, announcing that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The speech covered economic achievements, with Trump highlighting reductions in inflation, lower energy costs, and tax relief measures, including the expanded child tax credit. He pointed to families benefiting from these policies, noting that one mother and her husband would receive over $5,000 in savings for the year. Trump also emphasized actions to maintain affordable utility rates and restrict bulk home purchases by investment firms.

The address included moments of partisan tension. Representative Al Green of Texas was escorted from the chamber for holding a protest sign, while other Democrats shouted objections during references to immigration and fraud in Somali-American communities.

Trump concluded the speech with a reflection on the nation’s future and the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, emphasizing continued growth, opportunity, and national pride.
