Bronx Apartment Building Partially Collapses After Gas Explosion

A massive gas explosion tore through a Bronx high-rise Wednesday morning, causing a partial collapse of a 20-story building in the Mitchel Houses and sending bricks and debris raining onto Alexander Avenue. The blast, reported around 8:10 a.m. at 205 Alexander Avenue in the Mott Haven section, left a large gash in the building’s facade and prompted a swift response from first responders.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, using drones and search dogs to ensure no one was trapped under the rubble. FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker explained that the collapse involved a ventilation shaft connected to the building’s boiler and added, “We believe that’s where the explosion occurred,” while noting that investigators would continue to determine the cause.

Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the emergency on X, urging residents to avoid the area while officials assessed the situation. “We are getting a full assessment from first responders and will continue to provide updates. Please avoid the area for your safety,” he said.

The explosion caused extensive damage, with videos showing a gaping hole along the building’s side and debris scattered across nearby streets. Residents reported that windows in neighboring buildings shattered and water bubbled from the ground, possibly due to a damaged pipe.

Officials evacuated certain apartments out of caution and shut off gas throughout the complex. The Red Cross established a support center at the Mitchel Community Center, and emergency shelters were set up to provide assistance to affected residents. Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol emphasized the priority of resident safety, noting inspectors were checking foundations and apartments to ensure structural integrity.

Multiple agencies, including the NYPD, FDNY, NYCHA, Con Edison, and the Department of Buildings, coordinated on the response. Streets near Alexander Avenue and East 135th Street remained closed, causing significant traffic delays. Some demolition was planned to remove the remnants of the collapsed chimney and restore essential services, including heat, hot water, and cooking gas.

The Mitchel Houses, completed in 1966, span two city blocks and contain 10 residential buildings with 1,730 units, housing approximately 3,500 residents. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the explosion while working to secure the site and support displaced tenants.
