President-elect Donald Trump has officially named North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum the new Secretary of the Interior. The announcement, made Friday, November 15th, follows a preview of the decision during a gala at Mar-a-Lago the night before. Burgum, a two-term governor and former software executive, will also serve as the Chairman of the newly created National Energy Council, a key component of Trump’s strategy to enhance U.S. energy production and reduce regulatory barriers.

In his statement, Trump emphasized the significance of the National Energy Council, which will oversee all departments involved in American energy production, from permitting to distribution. “This Council will oversee the path to U.S. ENERGY DOMINANCE by cutting red tape, enhancing private sector investments, and focusing on innovation,” Trump said. The President-elect’s vision for energy dominance includes leveraging the nation’s vast natural resources to foster economic growth, lower inflation, and reduce national debt.

Burgum, 68, expressed gratitude for the nomination, writing on X, “I’m deeply grateful to the President for this amazing opportunity to serve the American people and achieve ENERGY DOMINANCE!”

Recognized for his business expertise and decisive leadership as governor, Burgum has focused on fiscal conservatism and deregulation, especially in North Dakota’s oil and gas industries. His leadership is expected to play a crucial role in transforming the Department of the Interior and aligning it with the administration’s economic expansion and energy independence goals.

Throughout his political career, Burgum has highlighted the importance of a business-oriented approach to governance. As governor, he advocated for tax cuts, deregulation, and budget reform in North Dakota. His tenure has also been distinguished by efforts to engage with Native American tribes and advocate for funding for addiction recovery.

Burgum’s appointment comes as Trump gains backing from major Republican figures. Burgum, who supported Trump in the 2024 election following a brief 2023 presidential run, has taken on the role of loud spokesperson for the former president. His selection to run the Interior Department demonstrates his support for Trump’s objective of cutting bureaucracy and improving U.S. energy capability.
