A Brooklyn middle school dean was stabbed around 4 p.m on Monday, February 6. The 29-year-old dean was stabbed while protecting a 13-year-old student who was being attacked by a group of teenagers. He was stabbed in the arm and taken to Brookdale Hospital. The incident occurred outside IS 383 Philipa Schuyler in Bushwick. The group of teenagers responsible for the attack has not been apprehended.

New York City has been experiencing high levels of violent crimes committed by teenagers. Teenagers are committing crimes against one another and in this instance, a school administrator who ended up injured. All these violent incidents are concerning as they reinforce the reality that anyone can fall victim in New York City.

In January, Mayor Eric Adams and the NYPD warned that violence committed by teenagers was worsening throughout the city. Adams lamented how teenagers were becoming career criminals from an early age. He called on parents and community leaders to play a part in mentoring teenagers so there could be a reduction in the levels of violent crime.

“The violence that’s coming from our young people,” Adams said. “When you see some of these actions, when you see the total disregard for human life, it is really challenging to just know the impact of what the victims are going through and how these young people are destroying their lives.”

The Mayor emphasized that such a worrying state of affairs could not be normalized.

Parents and organizations such as the NYC School Safety Coalition have asked that safety in and around schools be improved. The School Safety Coalition has asked that more School Safety Agents and police officers be deployed.
