Attempted Assassination on Prominent Haitian Journalist

Violence has been one of the more prominent problems plaguing Haiti recently. The Caribbean nation has been going through a period of turmoil. Journalists have been targets of violence, with some even losing their lives.

This worrying trend has continued with the attempted assassination of prominent journalist Roberson Alphonse. Alphonse was shot several times in his car while on his way to work. According to the Caribbean National Weekly, unidentified gunmen approached Alphonse’s vehicle and opened gunfire on the journalist.

An unknown witness is credited with helping save Alphonse’s life by stopping the bleeding in his wounds before the arrival of medical professionals. The shooting incident took place on Tuesday, October 25th in Haiti’s capital city, Port Au Prince.

Alphonse is a well-renowned journalist, known for his professionalism, rigor, and “sense of perfection.” The assassination attempt, which left Alphonse needing multiple operations, was condemned in Haiti.

Still on the News…

“I unequivocally express my total disapproval of the trivialization of life and the constant threat hanging over the lives of peaceful citizens, including press workers in the country. I send my wishes for a speedy recovery to this great friend who is for me Roberson Alphonse,” said former Haitian legislator Jocelerme Privert. Haitian legislator Joseph Lambert called for a judicial inquiry.

The assassination attempt on Alphonse comes at a frightening time for journalists in Haiti. On Monday, October 24th, the body of journalist and lawyer Garry Tess was found.

Tess had been missing since October 18th. A government official, Ronald Richemond, announced that the public prosecuting authority and police had launched an investigation, already managing to question people regarding the matter.

Haiti continues to be an unsafe environment for journalists and civilians.
