Man Dies After Being Pushed onto Subway Tracks in Queens

On Monday, October 17th, around 4:45 pm, the subway was the scene of yet another fatal crime when Heriberto Quintana, a 48-year-old man, died after he was pushed onto the rail tracks by a 50-year-old man at the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue 74th Street station. According to the NY Post, Quintana accidentally bumped into the suspect, leading to the suspect’s phone falling onto the rail tracks.

The suspect asked Quintana to go down onto the tracks and pick the phone up, a request that Quintana refused. The two men had an argument that ended with Quintana being pushed onto the rail tracks and getting hit by the train.

“I heard a loud argument, an altercation. It was two Spanish guys — older, like in their 50s,” an MTA station cleaner at the station said. “You could hear them yelling on the mezzanine level. Then I heard screams and ran down to the platform.” According to the station cleaner, Quintana was still alive after he had been hit by the train.“He was alive when I saw him, breathing and everything.” Quintana was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital where he was declared dead.

Still on the News…

According to the MTA worker, the people who were present at the Jackson Heights station when the incident took place, tried to grab ahold of the suspect however he managed to escape onto another train. The police managed to eventually apprehend the suspect.

As previously reported, the subway has become a frequent scene of major crime. This is the ninth fatal incident that has taken place on the city’s subway in 2022. This is more than the eight deaths that occurred last year.

“It’s sad this is the new normal,” said the station cleaner. “I’ve worked down here half my life. If it’s not a subway surfer, it’s a fight; if it’s not a fight, it’s a stabbing or a shooting.”
