Trump Urges Letitia James to Drop Fraud Case for National Unity

President-elect Donald Trump’s legal team demanded on Tuesday, November 26th, that New York Attorney General Letitia James dismiss her civil fraud case against him, his family, and his businesses. Trump’s attorneys argued that continuing the case would perpetuate partisan strife at a time when the country needs unity. Trump, facing a $470 million judgment, vowed to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.

The civil fraud case stems from allegations that Trump overvalued assets to secure favorable loans and insurance. In September 2023, Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that Trump and his organization committed fraud, triggering a hefty financial penalty. Trump’s attorneys claim that the case lacks merit, emphasizing that there were no victims, injuries, or losses, as all financial obligations were fulfilled on time. They also highlighted disclaimers in Trump’s financial statements urging independent assessments.

Trump’s legal strategy has gained traction following a series of victories, including the dismissal of federal charges by special counsel Jack Smith. Trump’s attorney, D. John Sauer, argued that James’ case represents a politically charged attack, undermining public confidence in the justice system. Sauer compared the moment to President Abraham Lincoln’s call for unity during the Civil War, urging James to drop the case “for the greater good.”

The appeals court has shown signs of sympathy toward Trump, with judges questioning the validity of the initial judgment. They recently slashed Trump’s bond payment from $470 million to $175 million, allowing his defense team to press forward with challenges to the ruling. Trump has maintained that his assets were undervalued and accused James of weaponizing the legal system for political gain.

Critics of the case argue that pursuing the lawsuit amid Trump’s return to power would deepen partisan divides. Trump’s attorney stressed that businesses across New York face a “chilling effect” due to such enforcement actions, with many relocating to more business-friendly states. Trump’s legacy as a developer who revitalized New York City’s skyline was also cited as evidence of his positive contributions.

While James has not indicated plans to withdraw the case, the ongoing legal battle highlights the complexities of holding public figures accountable. As Trump prepares to assume office, the resolution of this case will be pivotal in shaping his next term and the broader political landscape.
