New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday in a meeting that defied expectations of confrontation. The 45-minute closed-door session focused on housing, utilities, public safety, and the city’s cost-of-living challenges, followed by a joint media appearance in the Oval Office.

Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, previously criticized Trump as a “despot,” while Trump’s team had labeled Mamdani a “communist.” During the press session, Mamdani avoided directly responding to questions about his earlier statements, emphasizing collaboration instead. Trump interjected at one point, telling Mamdani, “That’s OK, you can just say yes. It’s easier than explaining it,” while patting him on the arm.

Both leaders highlighted areas of agreement, particularly affordability. Mamdani outlined plans addressing housing, rent, groceries, and utilities, noting that New Yorkers face a “cost-of-living crisis that threatens to push families out of the city.” Trump responded that he shares similar goals, especially regarding reducing energy costs and supporting housing initiatives. “We have one thing in common. We want this city of ours that we love to do very well,” he remarked.

The discussion also included public safety and federal immigration enforcement. Mamdani said he plans to maintain roughly 35,000 NYPD officers while redirecting non-urgent calls to mental health responders. Trump emphasized shared priorities on crime reduction, stating, “He doesn’t want to see crime and I don’t want to see crime.”

Observers noted the amicable tone diverged from anticipated tension, with Trump praising Mamdani and suggesting he could surprise conservative constituents. The president said, “I think he wants to make it greater than ever before. And if he can, we’ll be out there cheering. I’ll be cheering for him.”

Mamdani stressed practical results over partisan disputes, commenting, “What I really appreciate about the president is the meeting that we had focused not on places of disagreement, which there are many, and also focused on the shared purpose that we have in serving New Yorkers.” Both expressed openness to future collaboration.
