The South African government formally reprimanded U.S. Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III this week after he made public comments criticizing several of the country’s domestic and foreign policies, escalating tensions between the two nations.

Officials from South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation summoned Bozell to a meeting in Pretoria on Wednesday, where they delivered a diplomatic demarche — a formal protest used in international relations. The rebuke followed remarks Bozell made during a business conference in Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa, where he sharply criticized South African policies and suggested Washington was “running out of patience” with the country.

South African officials said the ambassador’s comments were “undiplomatic” and inappropriate for a foreign envoy. During the conference, Bozell questioned several government policies, including land expropriation laws and Black Economic Empowerment programs aimed at addressing historic racial inequality. He also dismissed a South African court ruling related to the controversial anti-apartheid chant “Kill the Boer,” saying he considered it hate speech regardless of the court’s interpretation.

The remarks drew swift criticism from government leaders. Ronald Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, said the government took “a dim view” of the statements and reminded the ambassador that diplomatic engagement must respect established international protocols.

According to officials, Bozell acknowledged that some of his remarks were inappropriate during the meeting and later publicly affirmed that the United States respects the independence of South Africa’s judicial system.

The incident comes less than a month after Bozell arrived in South Africa, where he represents the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Analysts say the controversy reflects broader strains in relations between the two countries, which have disagreed on issues ranging from South Africa’s foreign policy alignment to its economic reforms.

Despite the dispute, South African officials emphasized that the country remains committed to maintaining strong diplomatic and economic ties with the United States.
