Residents Voice Frustration Over Illegally Parked RVs, Holden Introduces Bill to Curb

Red Hook residents in Brooklyn expressed their growing frustration on Monday, October 21st, over the increasing number of illegally parked RVs in their neighborhood. For over a year, these RVs have occupied various streets, particularly near Red Hook Park, leading to concerns about sanitation and safety. Many local residents voiced their grievances, highlighting that these vehicles often remain parked for extended periods without consequences, drawing attention to the apparent lack of law enforcement on this issue.

New York City law prohibits RVs from parking in the same location for more than 24 hours, but residents argue that enforcement has been inconsistent. The persistent presence of these RVs has prompted local officials, including Queens Councilman Robert Holden, to introduce new legislation that would further restrict RV parking. Holden’s proposed bill seeks to limit parking to no more than three hours, treating RVs similarly to commercial vehicles and banning overnight stays.

The NYPD has responded to the rising complaints by issuing over 388 parking violations and 80 summonses in Red Hook in 2024. Despite these efforts, many residents feel that these measures have not been effective in addressing the problem. The Department of Sanitation has also stepped in, announcing plans for an operation to remove abandoned vehicles in the area in the coming weeks, adding another layer of enforcement to tackle the issue.

Residents in the neighborhood expressed frustration, stating, “You don’t see this in Manhattan.” The constant presence of RVs has made the neighborhood feel “cluttered” and “unsafe.” As both local law enforcement and sanitation departments work to address the issue, residents are hoping for a more permanent solution.

The influx of RVs in Red Hook is part of a broader challenge that some New York City neighborhoods face. As the situation unfolds, it remains unclear how effective the new legislation and law enforcement efforts will be in alleviating the residents’ concerns. However, it is evident that the residents are demanding a stronger and more consistent approach from authorities to restore normalcy and improve the overall quality of life in the area.
