Democratic socialists in New York City are weighing potential primary challenges against several House Democrats following Zohran Mamdani’s recent mayoral primary win. Emboldened by the result, members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and allied groups have suggested targeting five incumbents, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries at the top of their list.
Jeffries, who has long dismissed threats from the left, appears unfazed. His political team has referred to the challengers as “Team Gentrification,” a phrase that critiques both the demographics of Mamdani’s base and what some view as a disconnect from the city’s longtime residents. It reflects frustration among establishment Democrats over the suggestion that they must now quickly adapt to a shifting political landscape.
Key figures in the DSA are discussing possible runs against Representatives Ritchie Torres, Jerry Nadler, Dan Goldman, and Yvette Clarke. Ashik Siddique, a national DSA co-chair, pointed to Mamdani’s grassroots origins as evidence that broader change is possible. “It’s really proof of concept,” he explained, referencing Mamdani’s start in organizing a Brooklyn city council campaign in 2017.
Jasmine Gripper, co-chair of the local Working Families Party, noted that some Democratic lawmakers may be increasingly vulnerable, a sentiment echoed after Mamdani and his ally, City Comptroller Brad Lander, secured more combined votes than Andrew Cuomo in several districts during the initial mayoral primary tally.
Jeffries has consistently challenged the progressive wing to face him at the ballot box, emphasizing in an interview with Wolf Blitzer that his focus remains on “pushing back against the extremism that has been unleashed on the American people.”
While some incumbents have downplayed the threat, others are taking note. Nadler, the only House member to endorse Mamdani so far, has begun coordinating with his team to improve outreach in areas where the mayoral candidate underperformed.
Though no challengers have formally declared their candidacies, discussions continue within activist circles. Jeffries’ adviser André Richardson issued a sharp warning: “If Team Gentrification wants a primary fight, our response will be forceful and unrelenting.”
