Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced criticism over ID requirements for emergency snow shovelers. Ahead of a February winter storm, the city offered temporary jobs at $19.14 per hour, with overtime at $28.71. Applicants had to provide two forms of ID, two passport size photos, and a Social Security card. The stringent requirements for a low-paying, short-term job sparked backlash, with some accusing the mayor of hypocrisy.

Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), opposes voter ID laws, yet his administration’s snow-shoveler program requires extensive ID checks. New York, where voter ID is not required, now mandates multiple forms of ID to clear snow, raising questions about the inconsistency in these policies.

Critics quickly pointed out the perceived double standard. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin remarked, “If Zohran Mamdani supports showing ID to shovel snow, Senate Democrats ought to support showing ID to vote.” New Yorkers on social media noted the apparent contradiction between Mamdani’s stance on voting rights and the need for multiple forms of ID for an emergency job.

New York Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis also criticized the city’s approach, noting that “you needed a vaccine card to enter a restaurant during COVID. Now you need two forms of ID and other documents to shovel snow in New York City, all while these same politicians, the Democrats, do not want voter ID,” and added that New York State issues driver’s licenses with automatic voter registration for non-citizens. Malliotakis called the city’s approach “hypocritical,” highlighting the inconsistency in following federal laws.

While Mamdani defended the documentation rules, citing federal employment verification laws, the situation has raised broader questions about the application of ID policies. New York’s relaxed voter ID requirements stand in stark contrast to the extensive paperwork required for temporary snow removal work. This has fueled further debate on whether policies that mandate identification in certain contexts should be extended to voting.
