On Wednesday, October 23rd, Governor Phil Murphy announced an additional $17 million in funding to support child care facility upgrades across New Jersey as part of the American Rescue Plan. This brings the state’s total investment in child care infrastructure to over $140 million, one of the largest such commitments in the nation.

Governor Murphy highlighted the economic benefits of this investment, stating, “Affordable, exceptional child care is a vital part of a stronger and fairer New Jersey economy and the increased funding announced today will strengthen our state’s economic security and provide equitable opportunities to working parents. Increased access to high-quality child care allows more parents to return to the workforce, bolstering New Jersey’s economic growth and competitiveness.“

The announcement took place at The Kids Palace II in West Orange, which received nearly $200,000 in state funding to upgrade safety systems. These improvements will allow the center to expand its offerings to include infant care, addressing a critical demand in the area. Jorroys Reyes-Moton, Director and Owner of The Kids Palace II, expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “Governor Murphy’s visit highlights the significance of the support we have received through this grant, which has been so important in helping us create a dedicated infant-toddler space in our center.“

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) has already approved $85 million in grants to over 400 child care centers through its Child Care Facilities Improvement Program. These centers serve more than 34,000 children and employ over 8,500 staff members. The newly announced funds are expected to benefit an additional 200 centers, expanding access to high-quality child care across the state.

Tim Sullivan, CEO of NJEDA, emphasized the significance of this funding, noting “Reliable and high-quality child care services are critical to New Jersey’s economic growth. Too often, financially stretched providers forgo necessary investments in facility upgrades. This program is central to Governor Murphy’s plan to support working families and build a more inclusive economy.”

With child care costs in New Jersey among the highest in the nation, Governor Murphy reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving access and affordability. The additional $17 million will ensure that all eligible centers that applied for Phase One of the Child Care Facilities Improvement Program will receive necessary funding, representing a significant step forward in making child care more accessible for families statewide.
