Florida AG Files Lawsuit Over Alleged Political Discrimination by FEMA Officials

On Thursday, November 14th, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody initiated legal action against FEMA officials, alleging discrimination against Trump supporters in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. The lawsuit, filed in Tallahassee, accuses FEMA employees of selectively withholding aid from Florida residents based on their political affiliation, as evidenced by Trump signs displayed on properties.

According to whistleblower accounts, former FEMA supervisor Marni Washington instructed her team in Lake Placid to avoid homes with Trump-related signage. Washington, who was later dismissed, claimed this directive stemmed from prior incidents of hostility toward FEMA staff in politically charged environments. However, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell condemned the alleged actions, stating, “This is a clear violation of FEMA’s core values and principles to help people regardless of their political affiliation.”

The lawsuit names Washington and Criswell as defendants, seeking punitive damages for alleged civil rights violations under 42 U.S.C. § 1985(3). Moody emphasized the importance of impartiality in disaster relief, declaring, “This lawsuit is a step toward accountability and ensuring that emergency assistance is provided fairly to all Americans, regardless of their political views.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis supported Moody’s actions, describing the alleged discrimination as “egregious” and directing state agencies to conduct an independent investigation. He added, “The blatant weaponization of government by partisan activists in the federal bureaucracy is unacceptable.” DeSantis also highlighted concerns over FEMA’s credibility and called for systemic reforms to prevent future incidents.

Washington defended her directive in a statement, asserting that similar guidelines had been issued during past deployments to avoid hostile interactions, irrespective of political affiliations. She alleged broader patterns of discrimination within FEMA, claiming the agency used her as a scapegoat. However, Criswell vowed to ensure accountability, stating, “I will continue to do everything I can to make sure this never happens again.”

The legal action has intensified scrutiny of FEMA’s practices and prompted broader discussions about political neutrality in federal agencies. Moody’s lawsuit seeks not only damages but also structural changes to ensure equitable disaster response nationwide.
