American Defense Contractor Tony Holden Freed After 902 Days in Kuwaiti Detention

Tony Holden, a Memphis native and U.S. defense contractor, has returned to the United States after being detained in Kuwait for 902 days on drug charges his family and advocates claim were fabricated. Holden was among ten Americans released this week as part of a diplomatic effort led by U.S. officials.

Holden was working as an HVAC technician at Camp Arifjan, a U.S. Army base in Kuwait, when he was arrested in November 2022. According to his family, he was violently apprehended by men posing as officers who forced their way into his apartment and later took him, his wife, and young daughter into the Kuwaiti desert. There, they allegedly threatened the family and coerced Holden into signing a confession written in Arabic—a language he does not speak.

Despite a negative drug test and no evidence of illegal activity, Holden was charged with drug possession, drug trafficking, and attempting to flee the country. During his trial, the presiding judge reportedly found the police report suspicious and noted inconsistencies, including a fabricated conversation in English by officers who did not speak the language. Nevertheless, Holden was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison.

His family and supporters maintained that the charges were baseless and politically motivated. They launched FreeTonyHolden.com to raise awareness and garner support, detailing the alleged abuses and legal irregularities surrounding the case. The advocacy group Global Reach also played a role in mobilizing public pressure and pushing for government intervention.

Holden’s release on April 30 came amid a broader diplomatic initiative led by U.S. envoy Adam Boehler. Since March, Kuwait has pardoned 23 Americans under what has been described as a goodwill gesture by the U.S. ally.

Upon his arrival at Washington Dulles International Airport, Holden expressed gratitude to those involved in securing his freedom. In a video posted online, he thanked President Donald Trump for his role in the negotiations. “I wanted you to be able to meditate on how you’ve affected, personally, lives and the difference that you’ve made,” he stated. “I give all the grace and honor to God. He uses instruments, and there have been a lot of people behind the scenes who have done a great job.”

Holden’s return has been welcomed by his family and supporters, who never stopped advocating for his release.
