A new phase of conflict in the Middle East rapidly escalated this weekend as joint military strikes by the United States and Israel unleashed unprecedented violence in Iran, provoking widespread retaliation across the Gulf, heightened regional instability, and global economic shockwaves.

On February 28th, U.S. and Israeli forces launched a coordinated attack on Iranian territory targeting military, nuclear, and leadership sites. Characterizing the action as a defensive reaction to supposedly Iranian missile arsenal and nuclear intentions, President Donald Trump stated the operation would entail “heavy and pinpoint bombing” of Iranian targets and would run “as long as needed.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was confirmed killed in the strikes, a historic event signifying the most severe direct confrontation between Iran and Western countries in decades. Tehran has announced 40 days of national mourning.

Across the Gulf, local authorities reported impacts from Iranian strikes: fires and structural damage in Dubai, intercepted missile barrages over Kuwait and Qatar, and attacks near U.S. bases and facilities. Governments in the UAE and Bahrain condemned these actions as violations of sovereignty, while airspace closures and heightened alerts became widespread.

Regional powers and global institutions have reacted with alarm. The United Nations has convened emergency meetings to address the crisis, while world leaders have issued calls for restraint.
