South Africa has formally accepted Leo Brent Bozell III as the new U.S. Ambassador. Bozell, a conservative media figure and outspoken supporter of Israel, presented his Letters of Credence to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, with Deputy Director-General Clayson Monyela receiving the documents on Monday.

Bozell, appointed by President Donald Trump, arrived in South Africa quietly last week after months of anticipation. During his Senate confirmation, he outlined priorities including urging Pretoria to halt its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. A U.S. State Department official noted that Bozell “looks forward to taking up his post and representing America First foreign policy.”

The ambassador’s tenure comes amid tensions between the two nations over several international and domestic issues, including South Africa’s ties with Russia, China, and Iran. Bozell emphasized during his confirmation hearing that he would communicate Washington’s concerns regarding Pretoria’s “geostrategic drift,” and promote Trump’s offer of refugee status to white Afrikaners, citing claims of discrimination.

Bozell brings extensive experience in media and conservative activism. He founded the Media Research Center, a nonprofit monitoring media bias, and has contributed columns and op-eds to major outlets including The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. He has also authored six books and frequently appeared on television programs such as The O’Reilly Factor, Nightline, and Good Morning America.

The official accreditation ceremony with President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled for April, formalizing Bozell’s role as the U.S. envoy in South Africa.
