Travelers Without REAL ID Must Pay $45 TSA ConfirmID Fee

Travelers who cannot present REAL ID-compliant identification will face a $45 fee beginning February 1st to verify their identity through the Transportation Security Administration’s ConfirmID program at airport security checkpoints. The system provides a paid alternative for those without an acceptable ID who still plan to travel by air.

The fee covers the cost of TSA ConfirmID, a process previously funded by taxpayers. Passengers can pay online before arriving at the airport, while information about the program will also be available at designated locations near security checkpoints. Travelers using ConfirmID should expect longer wait times due to the additional verification.

Acceptable forms of identification include REAL ID-compliant state driver’s licenses or ID cards, U.S. passports, Department of Defense IDs, permanent resident cards, certain tribal identification cards, and other federally recognized credentials. Temporary driver’s licenses do not meet the requirements. TSA officials encourage travelers to update their identification through state Departments of Motor Vehicles to avoid delays.

Since May 2025, the REAL ID Act has required passengers to present compliant identification for air travel. TSA reports that over 94% of travelers already use REAL IDs or other approved forms of ID.
