On Tuesday, January 20th, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared on ABC’s “The View” and reiterated his support for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), criticizing the agency’s actions as harmful to communities and public safety.
Mamdani criticized ICE, saying the agency is “terrorizing people no matter their immigration status,” and added that daily images of individuals being forcibly removed from their homes and vehicles are deeply troubling.
The mayor’s remarks come amid national debate following the fatal shooting of Minnesota resident Renee Good by an ICE officer. Mamdani noted that such operations can harm the civic fabric of communities rather than enhance safety. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contend that the officer acted in self-defense, reporting that Good allegedly attempted to run over the agent with her car.
Highlighting his commitment to New York’s sanctuary policies, Mamdani stated, “What I said is that our values and our laws – they’re not bargaining chips,” signaling his intention to resist federal threats to withhold funding.
Concluding his remarks, Mamdani stressed that protecting residents requires policies grounded in humanity and respect for New York’s diverse population, reflecting his administration’s stance in its early weeks in office.
