Former Congressional Candidate Adem Bunkeddeko Enters Race for NY State Comptroller

Former congressional candidate Adem Bunkeddeko has announced his candidacy for New York state comptroller in 2026, joining a crowded Democratic primary challenging longtime incumbent Tom DiNapoli. Bunkeddeko, a two-time congressional contender from Brooklyn, emphasized the need for change in the comptroller’s office, asserting, “For too long, the Comptroller’s office has been on the sidelines – and New Yorkers have paid the price. It’s time for change.”

Bunkeddeko outlined a plan to invest the state’s unclaimed funds to create trust accounts for every child born in New York. He proposes using $500 million each year to create accounts for every child, which they could access upon turning 18, potentially giving them tens of thousands of dollars to pursue college, buy a home, or start a business. He also intends to allocate $250 million each year to fully fund a rental voucher program supported by tenant advocates and landlords.

Bunkeddeko plans to leverage the state’s pension fund for infrastructure projects, including high-speed rail and hydroelectric transmission lines, and to invest in affordable housing. He has also called for a comprehensive forensic audit of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, proposing a fare freeze until the review is completed.

Bunkeddeko joins a Democratic field that includes Drew Warshaw, who previously served as assistant secretary to Governor Eliot Spitzer, and Raj Goyle, an entrepreneur and former Kansas state legislator. Republican nominee Joseph Hernandez, a biotech entrepreneur, is also entering the race. DiNapoli, the current comptroller since 2007, holds the distinction of being the longest-serving statewide officeholder outside of Congress.

Bunkeddeko’s campaign seeks to redefine the role of comptroller, emphasizing both oversight and strategic investment as tools to address statewide economic and social challenges. His announcement adds to an increasingly competitive race for a position often overlooked in New York politics.
