Israel Marks Two Years Since October 7 Attack Amid Ongoing Gaza Negotiations

Israel observed the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Tuesday, with commemorations taking place as indirect negotiations continue between Israel and Hamas over a U.S.-backed plan to end the conflict in Gaza.

The day was marked across the country by local gatherings and memorials in affected communities. At the site of the Nova music festival, where more than 370 people were killed, relatives of victims gathered at dawn for a moment of silence at 6:29 a.m., the exact time the attack began. While many communities held private tributes, the official national ceremony has been scheduled for October 16 at Mount Herzl following the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah.

The October 7 assault left about 1,200 people dead and roughly 250 taken hostage. In response, Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza that continues to this day. According to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed over the past two years, and most of the enclave’s residents have been displaced.

Negotiators from Israel and Hamas have resumed indirect talks in Egypt to finalize a possible truce agreement. The proposal includes the release of hostages still held in Gaza, the return of Palestinian prisoners, and a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed optimism that a deal could be reached soon, while U.S. President Donald Trump warned Hamas of severe consequences if the plan fails.

Across Israel, images of hostages and victims continue to appear on public displays as the country reflects on the events of October 7 and the toll of the ongoing war. Two years later, both Israelis and Palestinians remain affected by the conflict, as diplomatic efforts continue toward a potential resolution.
