Minnesota DFL Yanks Omar Fateh’s Endorsement For Mayor

The Minnesota DFL has pulled its endorsement of State Sen. Omar Fateh in the Minneapolis mayor’s race after finding big problems with last month’s party convention.

A party committee said the July 19th convention was riddled with mistakes — nearly 200 ballots weren’t counted correctly, one candidate was left off the ballot entirely, and the credentialing process fell apart. Because of those issues, the DFL voided Fateh’s endorsement, put the Minneapolis chapter on two years’ probation, and ordered fixes for future conventions.

Fateh, a progressive who won the endorsement in July, blasted the decision as unfair and said it strips Minneapolis delegates of their voice. Mayor Jacob Frey, who’s running for reelection, said the move was necessary to maintain trust in the process.

The fallout is sparking bigger fights inside the party. Rep. Ilhan Omar slammed the decision as undemocratic and warned it could alienate the DFL’s base. Fateh could still appeal, but for now the race is wide open.
