As the 2025 New York City mayoral race intensifies, two candidates have emerged as fundraising leaders, with former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani dominating the field in contributions.

Cuomo, who officially entered the race on March 1, reported raising $1.5 million in just 13 days, significantly boosting his campaign. According to his team, he received donations from 2,800 individuals. Notably, $332,000 of these contributions are eligible for the city’s public matching funds program, which could increase his total to nearly $4.2 million. Cuomo, seeking a political comeback after resigning as governor in 2021, expressed his gratitude, saying, “I’ve been humbled by the depth and breadth of the outpouring of support we’ve received upon entering this race.” He emphasized his commitment to improving the city: “New York is the greatest city in the world, and those who live here deserve a New York that is better, stronger, safer, and more affordable than the New York we have today.”

In contrast, Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist from Queens, has raised close to $847,000 in the past two months. His campaign has reported that more than $500,000 of this amount will be eligible for matching funds, potentially adding another $4 million to his war chest. With over 16,000 individual donors contributing, Mamdani has emerged as a strong progressive contender. “We have the momentum, the movement, and the money to win,” he said.

While both candidates have demonstrated strong financial backing, the rest of the field has seen more modest fundraising results. City Comptroller Brad Lander raised just under $228,000, while State Senator Zellnor Myrie raised $136,000. Former Comptroller Scott Stringer raised nearly $188,000, and City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, who joined the race on March 8, raised $128,000 but has yet to qualify for public matching funds.

As the election season progresses, fundraising will likely remain a key factor in shaping the race, with Cuomo and Mamdani leading the way in financial support.
