On Monday, March 3rd, President Donald Trump suspended all U.S. military aid to Ukraine, putting over $1 billion in security assistance on hold. This follows a tense White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week.

A White House official said the pause allows a reassessment of whether U.S. aid is furthering peace efforts between Ukraine and Russia. “President Trump has been clear that he is focused on peace. We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution,” the official stated.

The freeze impacts approved military packages, including weapons shipments and Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative funding. Since taking office in January, Trump has not authorized new aid, and fresh congressional funding appears unlikely soon.

Tensions between Trump and Zelensky flared during their Oval Office meeting Friday. Zelensky pushed for stronger U.S. security commitments, while Trump criticized Ukraine for a lack of appreciation. The discussion reportedly became so heated that Ukrainian officials were asked to leave.

After Zelensky described a peace deal as “very, very far away,” Trump responded on Truth Social, saying,  “This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer!”

The White House has not set a timeline for the review, but future U.S. assistance will depend on Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate with Russia.
