Former Governor Andrew Cuomo remains the clear frontrunner in the Democratic primary race for New York City Mayor. A new Honan Strategy Group poll shows Cuomo with 38% support among Democratic voters, maintaining a dominant lead over his rivals.
Queens Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani has surged into second place with 12%, while incumbent Mayor Eric Adams has fallen to third place with 10%. Other candidates include City Comptroller Brad Lander at 7%, former Comptroller Scott Stringer at 5%, and City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, who has not announced a run, at 2%.
Cuomo has topped every major poll in recent weeks, solidifying his position as the race’s dominant figure. His growing support has been bolstered by key endorsements, including Representative Ritchie Torres, who called Cuomo a proven leader capable of standing up to “extremist politics.” The District Council of Carpenters is also expected to back Cuomo, further strengthening his potential candidacy.
Meanwhile, Mayor Adams continues to struggle. His administration has been plagued by federal investigations and sinking approval ratings, making his path to reelection increasingly difficult. Despite this, Adams has insisted he will run for a second term.
Mamdani is gaining momentum among progressive voters with his focus on housing, transit, childcare, city-run grocery stores, and rent-freeze. His grassroots fundraising efforts have also brought in millions in public matching funds.
With the Democratic primary set for June 24, speculation continues to swirl around Cuomo’s potential entry. While he has yet to make an official announcement, sources suggest he could declare his candidacy as early as this weekend.
