On Thursday, September 19th, Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the ongoing efforts of New York State to deliver $2.3 billion in tax relief through the School Tax Relief (STAR) program, benefiting nearly 3 million New Yorkers. The STAR program offers significant property tax relief to homeowners and senior citizens across the state, with benefits varying based on income and other factors. More than 2 million residents have already received their STAR tax relief, and nearly 1 million more will receive theirs in the coming weeks.

Governor Hochul expressed her commitment to reducing the cost of living for New Yorkers, stating, “From tax credits to child care assistance to summer food benefits, we’re continuing to put more money back in the pockets of working New Yorkers to address the cost of living and help families across our state.” The STAR program provides eligible homeowners with tax credits or exemptions, with benefits typically ranging from several hundred dollars for most homeowners to over $1,000 for seniors with incomes below $98,700.

State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins emphasized the importance of the STAR program, noting, “These tax-saving efforts are a testament to our commitment to supporting New York’s working families as they face the pressures of rising living costs. The Senate Democratic Majority worked closely with Governor Hochul to expand access to child care assistance, increase child tax credit payments, and deliver much-needed food assistance to children across the state.”

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie also applauded the relief measures, saying, “Today’s announcement will provide millions of New Yorkers the additional savings needed to invest and spend on everyday items they need most. Our continued effort to ensure this program is fully funded and accessible highlights the Assembly Majority’s commitment to making New York more affordable.”

Senator Jamaal Bailey added, “This initiative will significantly assist families by enhancing access to childcare support and food benefits. Such measures are essential for alleviating the financial burdens of everyday necessities.”

Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn praised the STAR program’s role in supporting families during the back-to-school season, stating, “By improving the STAR program and boosting access to childcare and expanding child tax credit payments, we’re making New York more affordable and livable for all communities.”
