On Tuesday, May 14th, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul announced a transformative plan for Brooklyn’s Marine Terminal and Staten Island’s Howland Hook Marine Terminal, aiming to revitalize these waterfronts into thriving economic hubs. This agreement, involving the City of New York, New York State, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), marks a significant development in urban maritime infrastructure.

The Brooklyn Marine Terminal is poised to become a modern maritime port and a vibrant mixed-use community hub. This initiative is part of Mayor Adams’ vision for a “Harbor of the Future,” which he emphasized would transform the waterfront to fuel growth and innovation in the 21st century.

“For 20 years, skeptics thought this deal couldn’t get done, but our administration prioritized the ‘Harbor of the Future’ and now we have the potential to create thousands of new jobs, generate billions in economic impact, and build a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood,” said Mayor Adams.

Governor Hochul highlighted the community-centric approach of the project, stating, “The transfer will allow the city, working in close partnership with the community and my administration, to begin the long-anticipated process of reimagining the Red Hook piers as a modern maritime facility that also serves community needs.”

The plan includes a $95 million initial investment to develop the 122-acre site in Brooklyn, which will not only enhance the city’s economic landscape but also focus on reducing truck traffic through micro-mobility strategies. The Howland Hook Marine Terminal on Staten Island will see the Port Authority driving long-term expansion to boost its cargo operations and economic growth.

The project also expects significant community engagement through a visioning process led by local elected officials and stakeholders to ensure the developments reflect community needs and expectations. This approach aims to foster a holistic integration of economic, social, and environmental considerations into the waterfront development plans.

This ambitious project aligns with broader strategies to rejuvenate New York’s waterfronts, showcasing a commitment to sustainable urban development and economic revitalization. The comprehensive plan reflects the city and state’s dedication to enhancing New York’s stature as a maritime and economic powerhouse while addressing contemporary challenges such as traffic congestion and environmental sustainability.
