The island of Barbados is gearing up to host its much-anticipated annual Food and Rum Festival from October 19th to 22nd. This year marks the 12th year of this culinary fiesta, which celebrates the island’s rich gastronomic heritage under the theme “Feed the Future.”

The festival, which made a triumphant post-pandemic return last year, is organized by the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) and is set to feature a blend of local and international culinary talents.

The festival kicks off with the “Oistins Under the Stars” fish fry, followed by a series of signature events, including the popular “Rise and Rum” breakfast beach party. This year, the festival has added a “Journey of Food” private dinner hosted by top chefs at three different restaurants. Celebrity Chef Renee Blackman will host her dinner at O2 Beach Club, UK Masterchef Winner Shelina Permalloo at All Seasons Resort, and Celebrity Chef Juan Diego Vanegas at Colony Club. These exclusive dinners, beginning at 7:00 p.m., promise an intimate culinary experience for the attendees.

Aprille Thomas, Director of Public Relations and Corporate Communications at BTMI, encapsulated the essence of the festival, saying, “One cup of culinary talent, featuring our local chefs and mixologists; two pounds of the community; a dash of vibes as this year we have top local, regional, and international acts like Ayra Starr and Skinny Fabulous; and last but not least, a garnish of showing off to the world and inviting visitors to experience why we are the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean and the Birthplace of Rum.”

The festival is not just a celebration of Barbados’ culinary scene but also a platform to showcase the island’s commitment to nurturing young, local talent. This year, chefs and mixologists are challenged to create dishes and cocktails using 50% Barbadian ingredients, rum, and a mystery ingredient from a Mystery Box, pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation.

The BTMI is investing heavily in promoting the festival across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean to attract food enthusiasts and travelers to the island. Tickets for the festival went on sale on July 14, 2023, and are available on the official website.

As the days draw nearer, the excitement among food aficionados and rum connoisseurs is palpable. The Barbados Food and Rum Festival is not just an event; it’s a journey of flavors, culture, and camaraderie, making Barbados the go-to destination for culinary adventurers.
