In a heart-wrenching incident that has left a community in shock, 12-year-old Yahshua Robinson tragically lost his life during a gym class at Canyon Lake Middle School in Lake Elsinore, California on August 29th. The young student was compelled to run in the sweltering heat, with temperatures soaring to 107 degrees Fahrenheit, after reportedly wearing the wrong attire for the class.

Witnesses, including fellow students, recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the tragedy. Robinson, struggling under the oppressive sun, pleaded with his gym teacher for water. He was heard saying, “I can’t breathe,” before collapsing on the field and being rendered unresponsive.

Students relayed the distressing events to Robinson’s aunt, Amarna Plummer, painting a picture of a preventable tragedy. Plummer, grappling with grief and disbelief, questioned, “Why would you have a child in his clothes — he didn’t dress out — running [in] a field?”

Emergency services were promptly alerted, and Robinson was rushed to Loma Linda University Medical Center in Murrieta, approximately 10 miles from the school. Despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at 12:55 p.m.

Adding to the anguish, it was revealed that Robinson’s mother, a gym teacher in a different district, had cautioned school officials about the extreme heat on that very day. She had explicitly advised against outdoor gym activities. Tragically, she later received a devastating call about her son’s condition.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Robinson’s death. The Lake Elsinore Unified School District, in a statement, expressed their profound sorrow: “In this difficult moment, we are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of one of our students due to a medical emergency on one of our LEUSD campuses. Our hearts are with the family, friends, and our school community.”

The community has rallied around Robinson’s grieving family, setting up a GoFundMe page to support them during this challenging time. As the investigation continues, there are mounting calls for a thorough review of school protocols, especially concerning physical activities during extreme weather conditions.
