Mayor Eric Adams is set to endorse a bill to establish a fresh city hall office, the Office of Healthcare Accountability, dedicated to monitoring and controlling irregularities in hospital expenses.

Recognizing the financial strain on New York citizens, especially those living paycheck to paycheck, Adams emphasized the need for affordable healthcare.

He said, “Healthcare is a human right, not a privilege, and this includes ensuring that there is cost transparency in our healthcare system.”

The legislation, backed by Councilwoman Julie Menin, will ensure that the ability to pay does not influence the quality or accessibility of healthcare services.

Menin stated, “With this legislation, we will establish an Office of Healthcare Accountability to finally uncover the hidden costs and expose the price gouging that has plagued our healthcare system for far too long. We cannot allow exorbitant healthcare costs to burden our families, businesses, and city government any longer.”

Adams expressed his commitment to promoting cost transparency in the city’s healthcare system.

He said, “New Yorkers deserve affordable access to necessary healthcare without straining their finances.” Mayor emphasized that the bill will provide comprehensive information to empower New Yorkers, enabling them to maintain good health and receive the care they rightfully deserve.”

The bill, which was previously approved, is designed to increase clarity regarding procedures at both private and city-operated hospitals.

The law will be implemented approximately eight months from now, requiring the staff to generate reports concerning hospital procedures, insurance, and drug costs.
