Two individuals seeking asylum were found dead under suspected drug overdose circumstances in a car near a large migrant facility in Brooklyn, New York, according to the local police.

The victims, aged 24 and 25, were discovered early Thursday morning outside The Jefferson, a large commercial building repurposed in March by the Adams administration to aid with the migrant influx.

One of the victims, the 25-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 24-year-old was taken to Woodhall Hospital but ultimately succumbed to his condition.

Authorities reported the presence of drug-related items within the car. At the time of reporting, the city’s Medical Examiner has to confirm the cause of death for both individuals.

According to media reports, the deceased men, whose nationalities are yet to be established, arrived in New York in December 2022.

The Jefferson, situated at 455 Jefferson Street, is one of two recently launched Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers (HERCs) designed to manage the surge of migrants from the southern border. The second center is in the formerly vacant Candler Tower office in Times Square.

A representative from City Hall expressed their condolences about the deaths and confirmed the New York Police Department is conducting an investigation into the incident.
