New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Department of Education Chancellor David Banks, and Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) Commissioner Keith Howard announced on Friday, March 31st, that the application portal for the Summer Rising program would open on April 17th, 2023, and accept applications until May 1st, 2023.
“I’m thrilled to announce that applications for Summer Rising will go live on April 17th just in time for families as they start the summer countdown,” said Mayor Adams. “This year’s Summer Rising program will build off of last year’s very successful program, starting with changes to the application process based on feedback from families and providers. Up to 110,000 students from kindergarten through eighth grade will have the chance to grow, learn, and explore their talents and imagination. We can’t wait to welcome them back.”
The Summer Rising application process was formerly on a first come, first served basis. However, after hearing from families, community-based organizations, and schools, the application process was changed. The new procedure will look to make the application process more inclusive, equitable, and family-friendly. Students in temporary housing and foster care will be prioritized. Students in the 12-month Individualized Education Programs (IEP) mandated for summer school or with a connection to the school year CBO program or school community, will also be prioritized.
The application portal will be available online and accessible on any device with an internet connection. New York City Public Schools will provide trained coordinators to assist those families that are not technologically adept.
At the launch announcement, DYCD Commissioner Howard said, “The mayor’s continuous investments offer an array of opportunities that will give young people the tools to flourish both academically and socially. Most importantly, we look forward to providing each student a safe and fun summer experience.
Summer Rising is specially designed to cater to New York City’s youth. It will cater to students from kindergarten up to the eighth grade. These students will be provided with academic resources and will participate in activities in English, Math, and art subjects. It is a program that encourages curiosity with activities to help the youth learn, build social skills, and be able to interact with both their peers and adults. The program will also provide holistic support socially, emotionally, and academically.
“Last year, families across New York City saw firsthand the benefits of a robust summer program that provides not only academic support — addressing challenges we continue to face combatting learning loss from the pandemic — but fun and enriching activities, allowing our youngest to play, create, and develop new passions and interests,” said DOE Chancellor Banks. “I’m thrilled we will once again be offering these exciting opportunities for young people this summer, now with a more equitable and inclusive application process.”
