Adeed Fayaz, a 26-year-old NYPD police officer, died on Tuesday, February 7th. Fayaz was shot in the head while off duty on the evening of Saturday, February 4th, succumbing to his injuries. He is survived by his wife and two children.

“Police Officer Adeed Fayaz was a father, a husband, a son, and a protector of our great city. Officer Fayaz was shot Saturday night and he tragically succumbed to his injuries today. Our Department deeply mourns his passing, and his family and loved ones are in our prayers,” NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell wrote on Twitter.

Shooting Incident

Fayaz and his brother-in-law met 38-year-old Randy Jones in Brooklyn on Saturday night. The police officer had seen an advertisement on Facebook Marketplace for a vehicle he was interested in buying. After Fayaz and his brother-in-law got acquainted with Jones, he asked them if they had guns on them, to which they answered no. Jones went on to place Fayaz in a headlock, demanding money from the two men. When the police officer managed to break free, he was shot in the head. Jones fled to a black BMW, firing shots as he ran off. The brother-in-law grabbed Fayaz’s gun and returned fire, however, Jones escaped unscathed. Fayaz was hospitalized at Brookdale Hospital, where he died.

Jones Arrest

Jones was arrested on Monday, February 6 while hiding at the Days Inn in Rockland County. He was in the presence of his girlfriend and five children according to the NYPD. Fayaz’s handcuffs were used on Jones during his arrest. Dash cam footage obtained from Fayaz’s brother-in-law made it possible for the police to link the black BMW to Jones’ mother. The NYPD said it would be investigating other Facebook Marketplace robberies to see if there is any connection between them and Jones.

Cowardly Act

Mayor Eric Adams labeled Jones a coward. “Officer Adeed Fayaz dedicated his life to keeping his city safe,” Adams said. “We lost him to a coward’s bullet, but his love for his fellow New Yorkers will endure. His death is a tragedy. Join me in keeping his family, friends, and brothers and sisters in the NYPD in your hearts tonight.”

Fayaz’s funeral took place at Makki Masjid Muslim Community Center in Brooklyn on Thursday, February 9th
