United States Senator for New York Kirsten Gillibrand’s office announced that Senator Gillibrand and some of her Democratic colleagues had managed to secure $18.3 million of federal funding for the Bronx. This federal funding will be the final funding package for the 2023 fiscal year.

“I’m proud to deliver this funding to our Bronx communities,” said Senator Gillibrand. “These funds will not only help preserve and build up tourist hubs like the New York Botanical Garden and cultural centers like the Universal Hip Hop Museum, but will also go toward upgrading the borough’s health care facilities to help provide affordable and accessible quality health care.”

The funding will go to various organizations and projects in the Bronx that are in the fields of health, education, environment, and leisure.

Health

The Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center will receive $3 million of the funding. Lincoln Hospital is an important service provider in the area, treating more than 20,000 patients per year. The funding will go towards replacing 200 hospital beds. Just over $2 million will be spent on Urban Health Plan, which will include renovations and upgrades to the St. Lawrence Community Health Center. Funds will also be directed towards improvements to signage, roofs, and elevators at three Urban Health Plan sites. The Montefiore Medical Center will receive funding of $750,000. This will go towards establishing satellite behavioral health clinics in underserved or high-need areas. The clinics will cater to the mental health needs of school-age children. They will provide holistic mental health treatment that includes individual and family therapy and several other forms of treatment. $675,000 of the federal funding will go towards the building of a Maternal and Child Health Center (MCHC) at the Union Community Health Center. The MCHC will have five pediatric exam rooms, an OB/GYN exam room, a pediatric dental chair, and a behavioral health consultation space.

Education

Hostos Community College of CUNY will receive funding of $1 million. This will go towards the college expanding its degree programs with four-year colleges and universities. New partnerships will be created that will give students higher-quality academic opportunities. New York Sun Works will see funding worth $800,000 to introduce hydroponic farm classrooms to public schools in the Bronx. The funding will provide equipment and supplies that will make it possible for hydroponics to be taught to the students.

Leisure

The New York Botanical Garden will receive $2 million worth of funding that will see a complete renovation and restoration of the operations yard to a more modern Worker’s Operation Center. This will fulfill the work requirements of the Botanical Garden’s work staff. Save the Sound Hutchinson River Watershed Plan is a project to develop a watershed for the river in the Bronx. This will see a restoration of the river in a way that will allow people to enjoy activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming. Funding for the project will be $700,000. The Universal Hip Hop Museum, which is still under construction, will be funded with $5 million. The funding will assist with the museum’s interior fit and K-12 educational programming.

The Emerald Isle Immigration Center will be provided with $330,055 of funding which will go towards the renovation of its Katonah Avenue community facility. The funding will allow the expansion of space and make the center more accessible to the elderly and families. The Mosholu Preservation will be handed just over $1 million to aid the development of businesses.
