On Thursday, January 12th, the African Advisory Council of the Bronx Borough President’s Office held its monthly meeting. The meeting had over 100 people present, which was record breaking attendance. Many of the attendees joined the meeting to hear more about the candidates running for the board positions on the African Advisory Council.

Mohammad Mardah, who has been the chairman of the African Advisory Council since 2018, is retiring. There are two candidates running for the chairperson position, Catherine Cudjoe and Sidiki Donzo. Both candidates, Cudjoe and Donzo, were in attendance at the meeting with their supporters. Both Cudjoe and Donzo did not disappoint in turning out their supporters to ensure that they are eligible to vote on March 9th. The other positions available are Vice Chairperson, Secretary, and Community Liaison.

“In the 12 years since the African Advisory Council was formed, we have never had that many community members attend the meeting. The room was so full that not only were people standing, but others were in the hallway,” said Mardah.

Mardah continued, “While we may attribute this to the upcoming election, we are hopeful that all those who attended the meeting would be ambassadors and spread the word to their various communities. We also encourage them to take advantage of the resources presented at the meeting, such as the Starfish Program, AT&T Community Engagement Program, the NY City Human Rights Commission discriminatory investigation and Metro Plus Health Insurance.

Finally, we hope that everyone who attended will return every month going forward, so that the Council will continue to grow and maintain the leadership position it enjoys in the city of New York.”

LittleAfrica News has done profiles, as well as video interviews, of both Cudjoe and Donzo in previous editions. Visit LittleAfricaNews.com to learn more about the candidates.

The next African Advisory Council meeting will be held on Thursday, February 2nd.
