Adams Crime Summit Fails to Produce Solid Solutions

Adams Crime Summit Fails to Produce Solid Solutions

On Saturday, October 22nd, Mayor Eric Adams hosted a “criminal justice summit” with the various stakeholders in New York City’s justice system. District Attorneys, defense lawyers, elected officials, police officers, and others attended the summit. Starting on Saturday, the summit was held at Gracie Mansion over two days.

It was a meeting of the minds meant to create viable solutions to the crime problem that is currently blighting the city. “We’re having an issue around the infrastructure of our criminal-justice system,” Adams told reporters during a conference call.

“This antiquated infrastructure is impacting on the ability of New Yorkers seeking justice on both ends of the spectrum.”

The Mayor’s Office intends on working to form groups that would assist with matters regarding pre-trial discovery, mental health, and other urgent issues.

There are suggestions of “care vans” that would assist defendants with mental health care after their first court appearance.

Still on the News…

While the summit did not seemingly produce well-articulated initiatives, a case was made that this was the first meeting and that it would take time to draw up solid, viable actions.

“We’re obviously just coming out of this, and so we’re still formulating the list of urgent action items,” Brendan McGuire, Chief Counsel to the Mayor and City Hall, told reporters.

According to reports, Adams brushed off complaints about the effectiveness of bail reform laws. Adams instead claimed that the problem of crime is multi-pronged and cannot be blamed on a single factor.

“Any time we engage in this conversation around the criminal justice system, people highlight one term, and that is ‘bail reform,’” the mayor said. “There are so many other aspects of the justice system that we were able to talk through and discuss.”

The issue of crime has hovered over the mayor’s head since he took office. With a major crime occurring nearly every day and statistics showing violent crime has risen by 39% since 2019, it is a matter that needs a viable solution.
