Senegalese President Macky Sall Names Amadou Ba the New Prime Minister of Senegal

On Saturday, September 17th, the position of prime minister was reinstated by Senegalese President Macky Sall when he appointed Amadou Ba, a former minister of the economy, to the position. The reinstatement of prime minister comes two months after a contentious legislative election in which Sall’s ruling coalition lost its commanding majority.

The position of prime minister in the West African country was abolished in April 2019, but Ba’s appointment restores it.

Amadou Ba is a Senegalese politician who was born on May 17, 1961. From 2019 to 2020, he was Senegal’s Foreign Minister. From 2013 to 2019, he served as Minister of Finance and Economy.

Ba has had a prolific career, earning a technical baccalauréat in management in 1980. He went on to earn a master’s degree in economic science with a concentration in corporate management, as well as a diploma in taxes and estates from the National School of Administration and Magistrature (ENAM) in 1988.

Ba is married with three children. He is an ex-officio member of the African Development Bank (AfDB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), the World Bank Group, and the World Bank (since 2013).

Following a meeting with President Sall on Saturday, Ba said on national television, “The major priorities that the president has outlined include improving household purchasing power, taming inflation, security, housing, vocational training, employment, and entrepreneurship.”
