Serena Williams’ Illustrious Career Ends After Losing the U.S. Open to Ajla Tomljanovic

Serena Williams’ esteemed career came to an end under the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday night, September 2nd.

After a competitive three-set match that featured superb tennis against a player who grew up idolizing Williams, the 40-year-old’s legendary career came to an end in front of an adoring U.S. Open crowd with a 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 loss to Ajla Tomljanovic.

Williams gave it her all, surviving five match points and unleashing everything she had left in the seventh and final game of the third set to extend the three-hour-plus match before Tomljanovic finished it off with a convincing third-set performance.

Tomljanovic eventually evened the second set, 5-5, before Williams won a tight tiebreaker to extend her U.S. Open singles run and her career for at least one more set.

Tomljanovic proved to be more than a worthy opponent, and she will be remembered as the one who brought an end to a legend.

“I think, honestly, what I’ll remember most is that my level was returning,” Williams said proudly after the match. “I think I’m really grateful for that. It’s great to be playing at such a high level, somehow improving. I don’t know how at my age.”

When asked what she wants to be remembered for, Williams mentioned her fight, intensity, and passion. She believes she has contributed significantly to tennis.

Williams has said she doesn’t know if there might be wiggle room in her retirement.

Williams has been a role model for many young black girls, impacted many people’s lives, and changed the sport forever. LittleAfrica News wishes her all the best in the next chapter of her life.
